Of the base emotions, it is fear that is often the most tangled and misunderstood.

Fear in its proper role is a powerful and important energy of life. It is the energy of protection, survival and caution. It is an energy that has helped to keep us and every one of our ancestors alive. When we can make it our ally we can open a whole world of power and exploration.

Yet fear out of balance is one of our greatest enemies, paralyzing our action, keeping us stuck in the realm of the known, keeping us from doing the things we most want to do.

When the source of fear is less well understood it is called a phobia. These irrational fears can be terribly debilitating in their lack of reason. This can even help to create a fear of the fear, an anticipatory anxiety.

Some of the most common fears are public speaking, asking people out and flying. Some common phobias are Agoraphobia, fear of going outside, and Claustrophobia, fear of close spaces, such as elevators or closets. There are many, many phobias and for each person they have there own patterns and signatures.

The unexpected and often unexplained onset of fear with all the physical responses to a great threat that often is not consciously seen is called an anxiety attack. These attacks, like phobias, can be excruciating in their lack of predictability and reason. The causes of an anxiety attack may be rooted in the attempts to suppress fear at an earlier time.

We do not eliminate fear from your life, but help you create a healthy and productive relationship with fear. Through this we can eliminate the power it has over you, allowing you to actually draw power from the very experience that once held you back. From this new understanding phobias and anxiety attacks will often dissolve as you discover more about this powerful and importance facet of life.
